Roundtable Releases Recommendations for Avoiding State Workforce Crisis

The Vermont Business Roundtable's Education and Training Working Group is pleased to present, "Having the Courage to Change: Avoiding the Coming Workforce Crisis," a new report looking at effects of, and answers to, a skilled worker shortage threatening the state. The report's core message is that to compete in a global economy and to fund needed social programs, Vermont must have an educated citizenry--delivered through an effective, adaptable education system.
Today, Vermont is plagued by a lack of school readiness among our youngest children, an increasing percentage of students deciding before ninth grade not to pursue higher education, and a fragmented post-secondary workforce education and training system. All of these are unacceptable conditions for a twenty-first century economy. Furthermore, the continued emigration of working-age Vermonters leaves the state in a poor position to address the needs of its rapidly growing senior population.
"Having the Courage to Change" offers a broad range of recommendations for creating an education delivery system capable of preparing our children for success and making Vermont more competitive in the national marketplace. If implemented and coordinated across private and public sectors, the Roundtable's recommendations will put Vermont in a strong position to take on both academic and economic challenges.
